Safeguarding Training for Therapists

​I deliver Core, Specialist, and Reflective safeguarding courses designed to support your professional development and boost your confidence in dealing with safeguarding issues. With over 15 years’ experience as a trainer and more than 25 years in frontline safeguarding, I offer sessions that are clear, effective, and grounded in real-world practice.​

 

Training is delivered live via Zoom, with in-person sessions available on request. You can join open-access courses throughout the year, or sessions arranged exclusively for your organisation or associate group. All training can be tailored to meet your team’s specific needs. Core Safeguarding Training - Safeguarding Awareness for Counsellors and Therapists (2 or 3 hours) 

Gain a solid foundation in safeguarding principles, current legislation and statutory guidance for child and adult safeguarding. Learn how to identify concerns, respond appropriately, and understand your responsibilities in a therapeutic context.

Why attend? The workshop will increase your knowledge and confidence about making safeguarding decisions about children and adults in the therapeutic context. We focus on joined up thinking across families and networks.

Who is it for? It is for therapists and therapeutic practitioners working with both adults and young people.  You can be in private practice or employed by an organisation.

What will I learn?

  • Legislative and statutory framework which promotes and safeguards children and adults– the focus is on joined up, systemic thinking.

  • An overview of contextual safeguarding and the systemic approach.

  • An overview of types of harm and abuse for both child and adult safeguarding.

  • The role of the therapist within this framework, exploring issues of confidentiality and contracting in the counselling context.

  • How the therapeutic relationship and our modality may influence safeguarding decisions.

  • Making sense of your concerns and threshold dilemmas

  • Guidance on recording and reporting concerns

Specialist Safeguarding Training courses  (1.5 hours each)

Disclosure of Non-Recent Abuse & the LADO Process - Understand how to respond to a non-recent disclosure in therapy and the pathways this may take, including the role of the LADO and pre-trial therapy.

 

Working with Suicidality & Safety Planning - Develop skills in assessing risk, creating effective safety plans, and supporting clients experiencing suicidal thoughts.​ We explore techniques from different therapeutic modalities. 

 

Working with Domestic Abuse & the DASH Risk Assessment - Understand the requirements of the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. Learn about using the DASH tool and work therapeutically with clients affected by domestic abuse.

Refresh and Reflect Safeguarding session  (1.5 or 2 hours)

A session to consolidate and refresh your safeguarding knowledge through case studies, ethical challenges, and common practice issues.

Why attend?

This interactive session helps therapists refresh and deepen their safeguarding knowledge through discussion, case studies, and peer learning. We'll explore ethical challenges and dilemmas, and often-overlooked issues in safeguarding in therapeutic practice.

Who is it for?
Ideal for therapists (including trainees) working with adults and/or children in any setting. It complements my previous safeguarding training, grounded in systemic thinking, and also can be attended as a stand-alone session. It is also a great way to experience my training style if you are considering the other courses.

What will we cover?

·       Refresh your Safeguarding knowledge – Ensure you are up to date with the most recent legislation and policy guidance for child and adult safeguarding.

·       Explore ethical dilemmas and practice issues – Understand the link between Safeguarding and your ethical guidelines.
